I'm a Licensed Psychotherapist, Entrepreneur, and Writer. I write about mental health, social issues, entrepreneurship, writing, and personal finance.
My client and I were hard at work together…
…huddled over her computer as we figured out her brand new spending plan.
One moment, she was excited…smiling…so happy to be taking charge of her finances.
The next minute, she was crying…discouraged…and ashamed of all the money she’d wasted on eating out and daily lattes.
…and it doesn’t feel good.
As my client and I worked through her complicated feelings about her money…
…and all the feels coming up for her with her spending plan…
…she started apologizing to me for being “so bad with money”.
Hold up, girl.
When I pointed this out, she said, “But you’re so good with money and when I compare that to where I’m at, I just want to give up”.
And this started a deep dive convo into all my money mistakes of the past…
…and how even now, I’m still learning about how to be a good partner to my money.
In fact, I had a major money fail in 2019…
…I chased paper and took on too many things.
I really wanted to maximize my earning potential in 2019…
…so I said “yes” to every income producing opportunity.
Next thing I knew, I was teaching college classes full-time…seeing a full caseload of clients…
…supervising and training new therapists in my counseling practice…
…and teaching an online program…all at the same time.
There were tasks I took on that I didn’t really like…just to make more money.
And that felt completely icky and made me dread getting out of bed some days.
Totally not worth it.
But rather than beating myself up over this money fail…
…or labeling myself as a money failure…
…or feeling guilty or ashamed that I don’t have my money relationship totally put together all the time…
…I simply see this mistake as a learning opportunity to guide what I do next.
So, my plan for 2020 is to:
My money doesn’t want me running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off.
Neither does yours.
The business projects I’m passionate about are the ones I’m naturally good at anyway… like 1:1 Money Therapy and small group Money Therapy.
So, in 2020, I’m trimming the fat off my biz…focusing solely on those two services…
…raising my rates…and committing myself to giving clients exceptional, life changing results…
…while not losing my damn mind trying to do a million things at once.
…focusing more on what I can do for money (like offering incredible value to clients)…
…instead of focusing on what my money will do for me.
